MUNICH HIGH END 2017

E220 Atrium 4

OUR SHOW SYSTEMS

This year at Munich High-End, Living Voice will be showing two loudspeaker systems, each featuring a Kondo M77 pre-amplifier and a pair of Gakuoh push-pull power amplifiers fitted with Living Voice 300B power valves. Ancillary equipment will be by Canary Audio (LV modified), CEC and Neodio.

The main system will be set up on two of our new – as yet un-named – equipment tables, developed in conjunction with UK based Natural Audio Structures.

VOX PALLADIAN & PALLADIAN BASSO

HORN LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION & TECHNICAL INFORMATION

FULL RANGE 4 CABINET SYSTEM

The main system features the Vox Palladian and Palladian Basso horn loudspeaker system. Weighing in at 800kgs this is a 5-way fully horn loaded design, housed in two pairs of enclosures with a bandwidth of 20Hz to 45kHz. The Palladian Basso Bass bass system is a folded exponential horn driven by a pair of long-throw high power drivers with reinforced paper diaphragms.

These drivers are powered by a 500watt MOSFET bass amplifier with 36dB/octave low pass filtering and modest EQ covering the frequency range 20-70Hz, where it crosses over to the Vox Palladian, which covers the lions share of the frequency range, operating from 70Hz upwards with a sensitivity of 105dB/w @1m.

LOW FREQUENCY DRIVE UNIT

LF drive unit is the Vitavox 151, a massively constructed 15″ bass driver designed specifically for horn loading. It uses a 2.1kg AlNiCo magnet to focus 1.4 Tesla onto the small 57mm diameter voice coil. This motor system drives a very light (45gm) straight sided paper pulp diaphragm with extreme precision.

The driver is loaded into the folded exponential horn geometry through a phase correction plug that ensures that the integrity of the pressure wave at the diaphragm is preserved at the mouth of the horn. This mid bass system operates from 70Hz – 400Hz.

MID FREQUENCY DRIVE UNIT

The MF drive unit is the Vitavox S2 compression driver with proprietary diaphragm of chemically hardened aluminium. Its 1.4 Tesla AlNiCo magnet drives a featherweight 3″ diameter aluminium diaphragm of just 50 microns thickness.

This driver is coupled to a radial exponential horn development through a complex phase correction plug. This driver system operates between 400Hz and 5kHz with dispersion at crossover of 90 degrees horizontally, and 120 degrees vertically.

HIGH FREQUENCY DRIVE UNIT

The HF drive unit is a Living Voice modified TAD TD-2002. This employs a 48mm Beryllium diaphragm formed by a process of high purity vacuum evaporation that weighs only 0.13 of a gram.

A powerful ALNiCo magnet produces a flux density of 19.5K Gauss. It is loaded to a unique proprietary Living Voice horn geometry machined from LG2 bronze. The high frequency system is operating 5 kHz – 15kHz.

ULTRA HIGH FREQUENCY DRIVE UNIT

Ultra high frequency drive unit is the Vitavox T9: It uses a 1kg AlNiCo magnet with 1.4 Tesla to energise a tiny 30 micron thick aluminium ring.

A symmetrical exponential horn with bullet shaped phase plug provides output from 15kHz – 40 kHz with 30 degrees of horizontal and vertical dispersion.

This unit has been developed specifically for the Living Voice Vox Palladian loudspeaker system in conjunction with Vitavox.

CABINET CONSTRUCTION

The cabinets are constructed from a custom-made substrate comprised of calibrated laminations of beech hardwood, a material chosen through a process of iterative development due to its natural sound and geometric stability.

The cabinets are finished in an open grain English Walnut and laid to a striking sunburst motif. All of the bronze work is finished in a rich mottled chocolate through an artisanal process of hand patination and Carnauba wax.

COMMENT FROM THE SPECIALIST PRESS AT MUNICH HIGH-END 2017 & 2016

Living Voice has been setting the bar for years; it’s time to acknowledge the consistent excellence that underpins that achievement… It is both a remarkable musical experience and the very essence of what high-end audio ought to be about.

Roy Gregory reaches ‘an inevitable conclusion’ : after half a decade of best-sound accolades, it’s time to give Living Voice a Lifetime Achievement Award.

What can I say about the Living Voice that I didn’t say last year? It’s a system that is impossible to beat in dynamic range and expression… surely one of the greatest stereos in the world.

Jonathan Valin as The Absolute Sound again selects the Vox Palladian system as ‘Best of Show.’

The dynamics, the tone, the… well what can I say, the realism is simply beyond what others can achieve. It is not just incrementally better hi-fi, it is monumentally more realistic in all ways I can think of.

Brad Morrical from Positive Feedback selects the Vox Palladian/Vox Elysian system as his ‘Best of Show.’

The result is a system that has all the extension, color, smoothness, bloom, power, pace, speed, focus, and definition you could possibly ask for, without any of the coloration, roughness, or discontinuity of typical horn-loaded speakers. Obviously, a Best of Show contender, but… at a price.

Jonathan Valin of US ‘high-end bible’ The Absolute Sound declares the Vox Palladian/Vox Elysian system ‘Best of Show.’

You also discovered a sound that was every bit as authoritative and physically present as that delivered by the Vox Olympians. Once again, it seems that Living Voice get the final word in Munich.

Roy Gregory of the AudioBeat sums up his personal highlights from Munich, including the Vox Palladian.

Now, Kevin Scott of Living Voice is a master of mating different horns to make a truly integrated whole, The Vox Palladian. In this category it’s a true winner – and way above competitors. Best male vocals I've heard from a horn system. Delicate upper mid and a seamless integration of the three upper horns, never – ever – heard better. The ease of presentation, the dynamics, the weightlessness of micro transients, I could go on. It takes years of fine-tuning to produce such a system.

Troels Gravesen, ‘tweaker’ extraordinaire and speaker designer par excellence, was much taken with our efforts at Munich.

Kevin Scott was using a pair of early generation Vox Elysian subs with the Palladians and producing a sound that put this room among the very best in show.

Jason Kennedy in The Ear’s best of show round-up.

Of course the Palladians look beautiful and are beautifully finished, but they are certainly ‘no style over substance monkey’ and deliver emotion and passion to the listener like little else I’ve ever heard.w

‘HiFi Pig’ show coverage.

Living Voice’s room at the High End 2016 was without a doubt the best sounding room of the show. It had that rare combination of finesse, flow, scale & uniformity while feeling free of the confinement of a ‘box’ or discernible point of origin. It displayed a true full range representation of the music without all that nonsense of ‘punch’ and supernatural highs.
I found I had trouble convincing myself to leave the room on the several visits I made there. Absolutely wonderful presentation.

OBX-RW3

2 WAY LOUDSPEAKER SYSTEM

System two showcases the G8 equipment table and our classic floor-standing OBX-RW3. A design which has evolved progressively over the past 25 years, it now features proprietary drive units throughout, a significantly improved cabinet, redesigned crossover topology, and new capacitor technology.

The RW3 retains its 94 db/w sensitivity and exceedingly benign impedance characteristic to deliver the virtues of the original RW, but with greater scale, energy and freedom. The performance in both musical and sound quality terms is a major step forward for what was already a celebrated design.
